A VPN on hotel Wi-Fi keeps your traffic encrypted on a network you share with strangers. Set it up at home before you leave, sign in to the hotel network first and only then switch the VPN on.
Hotel networks differ a lot. Some work with a VPN right away, some need a sign-in page first and some block VPN connections. This guide covers all three.
Why use a VPN on hotel Wi-Fi
On hotel Wi-Fi, everyone in the building shares one network. With a VPN on hotel Wi-Fi, your traffic is encrypted between your device and our server, so others on the same network cannot read it. That covers your logins and your streams.
The VPN does not change the hotel's own connection. If the hotel internet is slow, it stays slow. The same goes for a VPN on hotel Wi-Fi as for any shared network: cafés, airports and trains work the same way.
1Set it up before you leave
Typing in your account details on a hotel network is slow, and the sign-in page can get in the way. Do the setup at home:
Sign in to your IPTV VPN account, open Subscriptions and open your VPN subscription. The Your VPN card holds your VPN username and password, an OpenVPN file (.ovpn) for each server location and a WireGuard setup for each device number.
- Phone, tablet or computer: add a WireGuard tunnel with its own device number. See the WireGuard guide.
- IPTV Smarters Pro: import the .ovpn file in its VPN section at home. See the IPTV Smarters Pro guide.
- A TV stick you take with you: set it up at home as well. See the Fire TV Stick guide.
Test it once at home, so you know it works before you travel.
2Join the hotel Wi-Fi with the VPN off
Connect to the hotel Wi-Fi. Many hotels show a sign-in page where you enter a room number or accept their terms. Open a browser if the page does not appear by itself. Finish the sign-in with the VPN off.
A VPN that starts before the sign-in can stop the sign-in page from loading.
3Switch the VPN on
Once the hotel Wi-Fi works in the browser, switch the VPN on. Then open your IPTV app.
On iPhone, iPad and Mac, WireGuard can switch the tunnel on by itself on Wi-Fi with its On-demand setting. On a hotel network, the tunnel may then start before you finish the sign-in page. If the page does not load, switch the tunnel off, finish the sign-in, then switch it on again.
4If the VPN does not connect
- Try the other way to connect. If WireGuard does not connect, try the OpenVPN profile, or the other way round.
- Wait a moment. The OpenVPN profile tries the quick UDP connection first and moves to TCP by itself when a network does not allow UDP.
- Sign in again. Some hotel networks ask you to sign in again after a few hours. Switch the VPN off, open the browser, sign in and switch the VPN on.
- Check your plan. Open Subscriptions in your account.
5Use stealth mode on networks that block VPNs
Some hotel networks block VPN connections. Stealth mode makes your VPN connection look like ordinary secure web traffic. It needs a stealth app on your device. Set it up at home too, so it is ready if you need it. Read what is stealth mode for the full steps.
Follow the rules of the network you use.
The TV in the hotel room
Hotel room TVs often do not let you install apps. If you want to watch on the big screen, bring your own TV stick, already set up with the VPN, and plug it into the TV. Connect the stick to the hotel Wi-Fi, finish the sign-in page in the stick's browser if there is one, then switch the VPN on.
Devices on the trip
Your plan covers up to 3 devices at the same time. A phone, a tablet and a TV stick on the same trip each count as one device while the VPN is on. Give each its own WireGuard device number. Read how many devices you can use for more.
Quick checklist for a VPN on hotel Wi-Fi
