VPN Connected but No Picture? How to Fix It Step by Step

The VPN says connected, but your IPTV app shows nothing or errors. The usual causes and the fixes, in the order to try them.

VPN connected but no picture? Then the VPN itself is up, so the problem sits between the tunnel and your IPTV app. Often the app was opened before the VPN, two devices share one setup, or the stream would not play even without the VPN.

Work through the fixes below in order. Each one rules out one cause. The steps work for the WireGuard app and for the VPN inside IPTV Smarters Pro.

First: does it play without the VPN?

Switch the VPN off and open the same stream.

  • No picture without the VPN either. The VPN is not the cause. Check your IPTV app's own login and your playlist with the service that gives you the playlist.
  • It plays without the VPN. Go on with the fixes below.

This one test saves a lot of time, so always start here when you have a VPN connected but no picture.

1Close the IPTV app and open it again

An IPTV app that was open before you switched the VPN on can keep its old connection. Close it fully, not just to the background, then open it again with the VPN on.

Make it a habit: VPN first, then the IPTV app.

2Switch the VPN off and on

In WireGuard, switch the tunnel off and on again. On a computer, press Deactivate, then Activate. In IPTV Smarters Pro, disconnect and connect again in its VPN section. The exact menu name differs by app version.

3Check the device number

Each device needs its own WireGuard device number. If two devices use the same number, they push each other off the connection. The tunnel can show as on while no data gets through.

  • Check which device number each of your devices uses.
  • Give each its own number in your account.
  • Your plan covers up to 3 devices at the same time.

Read how many devices you can use for the details.

4Get a fresh setup file

Sign in to your IPTV VPN account, open Subscriptions and open your VPN subscription. The Your VPN card holds your VPN username and password, an OpenVPN file (.ovpn) for each server location and a WireGuard setup for each device number.

For WireGuard, download a fresh .conf file or scan the QR code again for the same device number, and replace the old tunnel. For IPTV Smarters Pro, download a fresh .ovpn file and import it as a new profile. Remove the old one so you do not pick it by mistake.

5Check that your plan is active

Open Subscriptions in your account. If the subscription has ended, the VPN may still show the last state for a moment, but no data gets through. A free trial stops by itself at the end of its time.

6Restart the device

Restart the TV, TV stick, phone or computer. Then switch the VPN on and open the IPTV app. A restart clears a network connection that got stuck.

7Try the other way to connect

If you use WireGuard, try the OpenVPN profile once, or the other way round. See the WireGuard guide and the IPTV Smarters Pro guide. If one way works and the other does not, keep the one that works and tell our support which one failed.

When only some streams fail

If most streams play with the VPN on and a few do not, try the same few streams without the VPN. If they fail there too, the streams themselves are the problem. If they only fail with the VPN on, ask the service that gives you the playlist whether it works over a VPN.

When the picture starts and then stalls

That is buffering, not a dead connection. Read IPTV buffering in the evening for the usual causes and the fixes.

Why it happens

A VPN connected but no picture is rarely a broken VPN, and a VPN connected but no picture on one device only points to that device. The tunnel only carries traffic. When the app does not get its data through it, one of three things is usually true: the app still holds a connection from before the VPN was on, another device uses the same setup, or the subscription behind the login has ended. The fixes above check each one in turn.

Quick checklist for a VPN connected but no picture

  • The stream plays with the VPN off.
  • VPN on first, then the IPTV app.
  • One device number per device.
  • A fresh setup file for that device.
  • The plan is active.

If it still does not work after all of these, contact our support and tell us the device, the app and the way you connect. For a VPN that does not connect at all, see Smarters VPN not connecting.

Questions and answers

Why is the VPN connected but there is no picture?

Usually the IPTV app was opened before the VPN, two devices share one device number, or the stream does not play even without the VPN.

What should I try first?

Switch the VPN off and open the same stream. If it does not play without the VPN either, the VPN is not the cause.

Do I need a new setup file?

If restarting the app and the tunnel does not help, download a fresh .conf or .ovpn file for that device and replace the old one.

Ready to connect?

Pick a plan. After checkout, your account has your VPN login and setup files.
