When a WireGuard QR code won't scan, the cause is usually the screen it is on or the camera that reads it. Make the code bigger and brighter, scan it from a second screen, or skip the code and import the .conf file, which holds exactly the same setup.
This guide goes through the fixes in order, and shows the file route for every device. The WireGuard QR code and the file come from the same place in your account.
Where the code is
Sign in to your IPTV VPN account, open Subscriptions and open your VPN subscription. The Your VPN card holds your VPN username and password, an OpenVPN file (.ovpn) for each server location and a WireGuard setup for each device number.
Pick a device number. The WireGuard QR code for that device appears on the card, next to the Download .conf button.
1Show the code on another screen
A phone cannot scan a code on its own screen. Open your account on a second screen, such as a computer or a tablet, and scan from there. This is a common reason a WireGuard QR code won't scan.
2Make it bigger and brighter
- Zoom in on the page so the code fills more of the screen.
- Turn the screen brightness up.
- Hold the phone steady and move it closer or further until the camera focuses.
- Avoid glare from a lamp or a window on the screen.
3Scan from the WireGuard app itself
Scan the code inside the WireGuard app, not with the normal camera app.
- Android: tap the plus button, then Scan from QR code.
- iPhone and iPad: tap Add a tunnel, then Create from QR code.
4Allow the camera
The first time you scan, the phone asks whether WireGuard may use the camera. If you said no, the scanner stays dark. Allow the camera for WireGuard in the phone's settings, then try again. The exact menu name differs by device.
5Clean the camera
A smudged camera lens makes the code blurry. Wipe it with a soft cloth and scan again.
6Use the file instead
If the WireGuard QR code still will not scan, use the file. It holds the same setup.
- Android: press Download .conf on the phone, then in WireGuard tap the plus button and Import from file or archive.
- iPhone and iPad: press Download .conf, then Add a tunnel and Create from file or archive. The file is in the Files app.
- Windows and Mac: press Download .conf, then Import tunnel(s) from file.
- TVs and TV sticks: a TV has no camera, so always use the file. Open your account in the TV's browser and press Download .conf.
Scanned, but it does not connect?
- Another device uses the same number. Two devices on one device number push each other off the connection. Pick a free number for this device.
- It is an old code. Scan the code again, or download a fresh file for the same device number, and remove the old tunnel.
- The plan has ended. Check Subscriptions in your account.
- It is the stealth code. The stealth part of the card has its own QR code for stealth apps. WireGuard cannot read that one. Use the code next to the device number.
Name the tunnel
After a scan, WireGuard asks for a name. Use something you will recognise, such as the device and the device number. That helps when you set up more devices later.
