On iPhone and iPad, the official WireGuard app is the way to use a VPN for IPTV. It covers every app on the device while its tunnel is on, so it works with whichever IPTV app you use, and it can switch itself on when you join Wi-Fi. This guide shows the setup with a QR code or a file, and the on-demand setting.
Why WireGuard on iPhone and iPad
IPTV apps on iPhone and iPad differ in what they offer, and many have no VPN section of their own. WireGuard does not depend on the app: it protects the whole device. Your internet provider, or the Wi-Fi you are on, then only sees encrypted traffic going to our server.
1Install WireGuard
Install the official WireGuard app from the App Store. It is the same app on iPhone and iPad.
2Show your tunnel
Sign in to your IPTV VPN account, open Subscriptions and open your VPN subscription. The Your VPN card holds your VPN username and password, an OpenVPN file (.ovpn) for each server location and a WireGuard setup for each device number.
Pick a free device number. The iPhone and the iPad each need their own number. If you can, open your account on another screen, such as a computer, so the QR code is easy to scan.
3Add the tunnel
In WireGuard, tap Add a tunnel, then Create from QR code, and point the camera at the code. Give the tunnel a name.
Only have the iPhone? Press Download .conf on it. The file is saved in the Files app. In WireGuard, tap Add a tunnel, then Create from file or archive, and pick the file.
4Allow and switch it on
iOS asks whether WireGuard may add a VPN configuration. Allow it; you may need to confirm with your passcode or Face ID. Then switch the tunnel on. A VPN symbol appears at the top of the screen, and you can open your IPTV app.
Let it switch on by itself
WireGuard on iPhone and iPad has an On-demand setting for each tunnel. Edit the tunnel and choose when it should start by itself: Wi-Fi only, Cellular only, or Wi-Fi or cellular. With Wi-Fi only, the VPN starts whenever you join a Wi-Fi network, which is handy in hotels and cafés.
iPhone and iPad, both at once
Each device needs its own setup, so add device 1 on the iPhone and device 2 on the iPad. If you also use a TV or a computer, give each its own number too. Your plan covers up to 3 devices at the same time.
Watching on a TV from the iPhone
If you send video from the iPhone to a TV, the VPN covers the iPhone side only. To protect the TV itself, set up WireGuard on the TV as well. See WireGuard on a Fire TV Stick or the Android TV guide.
Battery and data
WireGuard is light on the battery. The VPN adds a little extra data for the encryption, so on a mobile plan with a data cap, keep an eye on your usage. With On-demand set to Wi-Fi only, the VPN stays off on mobile data.
If something does not work
- The QR code will not scan. Make it larger on the other screen, or use the file instead.
- iOS did not ask for permission. Delete the tunnel and add it again, then allow the VPN configuration.
- The tunnel is on but the IPTV app shows errors. Close the app fully and open it again.
- The iPhone and iPad keep pushing each other off. They share a device number. Give each its own.
- Nothing connects on one network. Some networks block VPN connections. Stealth mode works with Streisand or Shadowrocket on iPhone and iPad.
