A Fire TV Stick can run the official WireGuard app, and then every app on the stick uses the VPN, your IPTV app included. WireGuard offers its Android app as a file on its own website, so the install takes a few more steps than an app from the Appstore. This guide goes through each one.
Two ways on a Fire TV Stick
- WireGuard for the whole stick. Every app is covered. This guide.
- The VPN inside IPTV Smarters Pro. If that is the only app you watch in, you can import your .ovpn file there and skip WireGuard. See the IPTV Smarters Pro guide.
1Allow apps from outside the Appstore
Amazon describes the setting in its developer guide. Open Settings, then My Fire TV, then Developer Options, and turn on Apps from Unknown Sources. On newer Fire TV software the setting may be called something else and ask which app may install files. The exact menu name differs by software version.
If you do not see Developer Options, open Settings, My Fire TV, About and click the entry with your Fire TV Stick name seven times. Amazon notes that some software versions show the menu this way.
2Get a download app
To save a file from a web address on the Fire TV Stick, install a download app from the Amazon Appstore, such as Downloader. If the Fire TV asks whether that app may install apps, allow it.
3Download WireGuard
In the download app, open wireguard.com/install. Under Android, choose Download APK File. That is the official WireGuard file. Open it when the download is done and install it.
4Download your tunnel file
Sign in to your IPTV VPN account, open Subscriptions and open your VPN subscription. The Your VPN card holds your VPN username and password, an OpenVPN file (.ovpn) for each server location and a WireGuard setup for each device number.
Do this in the browser on the Fire TV Stick. Pick a free device number and press Download .conf. Each device needs its own number, so do not reuse the number of your phone.
Typing on a TV is slow. You can also sign in on your phone, press Download .conf there and move the file to the stick with a file app of your choice. Downloading on the stick itself is usually quicker.
5Import the tunnel
Open WireGuard on the Fire TV Stick and add a tunnel from a file. On a phone the button is called Import from file or archive. On a TV screen the layout can differ, and the exact menu name differs by app version. Pick the .conf file you downloaded.
6Switch it on
Switch the tunnel on. The first time, the Fire TV Stick asks whether WireGuard may set up a VPN connection. Allow it. Then open your IPTV app.
Make it start by itself
WireGuard for Android has a setting called Restore on boot, which brings up the tunnels that were on when the device restarts. If you find it in the app's settings on your Fire TV Stick, turn it on, and you do not have to start the VPN after every restart.
Good to know
- One device number per device. Two devices on one number push each other off the connection.
- Your plan covers up to 3 devices at the same time.
- Turn the tunnel on before you open your IPTV app.
- To stop the VPN, open WireGuard and switch the tunnel off.
If it does not work
- The WireGuard file will not install. Check step 1 again. The setting must be on for the app you download with.
- The .conf file is not found. Download it again in the stick's browser and note the folder.
- The tunnel is on but nothing loads. Download a fresh .conf file for the same device number and import it again.
- Nothing connects on one network. Some networks block VPN connections. Stealth mode is made for those.
The same steps work on most Android TV devices too. See our guide for an Android TV box.
