An Android TV box is one of the easiest devices for a VPN. The official WireGuard app runs on it, covers every app while its tunnel is on and can start by itself when the box powers up. This guide covers boxes with Google Play and boxes without it, and how to get your tunnel file onto the box without much typing.
Two kinds of Android TV box
- With Google Play. Boxes with Android TV or Google TV have the Play Store. Install WireGuard from there.
- Without Google Play. Some boxes run a plain version of Android. WireGuard offers its Android app as a file: open wireguard.com/install in the box's browser and choose Download APK File under Android. Your box may ask you to allow installs from that browser first. The exact menu name differs by device.
If your Android TV box is a Fire TV device, follow the Fire TV Stick guide instead.
1Install WireGuard
Install the official WireGuard app, from Google Play or from the official file as above.
2Download your tunnel file
Sign in to your IPTV VPN account, open Subscriptions and open your VPN subscription. The Your VPN card holds your VPN username and password, an OpenVPN file (.ovpn) for each server location and a WireGuard setup for each device number.
Open your account in the browser on the Android TV box. Pick a free device number and press Download .conf. Each device gets its own number, so do not reuse the one on your phone.
To save typing on the TV, many boxes let you use a phone as a remote keyboard. You can also sign in once in the box's browser and stay signed in.
3Import the tunnel
Open WireGuard and add a tunnel from a file. On a phone the button is Import from file or archive; on a TV screen the exact menu name differs by app version. Pick the .conf file, usually in the Downloads folder.
4Switch it on
Switch the tunnel on. The first time, Android asks whether WireGuard may set up a VPN connection. Allow it. Then open your IPTV app.
Make it start with the box
An Android TV box is often switched off at the wall. Turn on Restore on boot in the WireGuard settings: it brings up the tunnels that were on, every time the box starts. Then the VPN is ready before you open your IPTV app.
Which IPTV apps does it cover?
All of them. While the tunnel is on, every app on the Android TV box uses the VPN: IPTV Smarters Pro, TiviMate, XCIPTV, OTT Navigator and the browser. To cover one app only, edit the tunnel in WireGuard and use Include only.
If you watch in IPTV Smarters Pro, you can also use its own VPN section with your .ovpn file instead of WireGuard. See the IPTV Smarters Pro guide.
Picture and connection tips
- A network cable is the steadiest connection for an Android TV box. Many boxes have a port for it.
- On Wi-Fi, keep the box close to the router.
- A VPN cannot make your internet faster than your plan, but it helps when your provider slows down streaming it recognises.
- Server location: Netherlands. A shorter path to the server usually means a steadier connection.
If something does not work
- The WireGuard file will not install. Allow installs from the browser you downloaded it with, then open the file again.
- The .conf file is not found. Download it again in the box's browser and check the Downloads folder.
- The tunnel switches off by itself. Two devices may share one device number. Give the box its own.
- Your IPTV app shows errors. Close the app, switch the tunnel off and on, and open the app again.
- Nothing connects on one network. Some networks block VPN connections. See stealth mode.
