How to Set Up a VPN on a Mac for IPTV

Set up the official WireGuard app on a Mac in four steps, let it start on Wi-Fi by itself, or use OpenVPN Connect with your .ovpn file.

3 min read

A VPN on a Mac covers every app on the computer while it runs, so your IPTV player is protected whichever one you use. The official WireGuard app comes from the Mac App Store and needs only a file from your account. This guide shows the setup, the on-demand setting that starts the VPN by itself, and OpenVPN Connect as the other option.

What you need

  • A Mac.
  • An active IPTV VPN plan. Each plan covers up to 3 devices at the same time.
  • Your files: sign in to your account, open Subscriptions and open your VPN subscription. The Your VPN card holds your VPN username and password, an OpenVPN file (.ovpn) for each server location and a WireGuard setup for each device number.

1Install WireGuard

Install the official WireGuard app from the App Store. After the install, WireGuard sits in the menu bar at the top of the screen.

2Download your tunnel file

In your account, pick a free device number for this Mac and press Download .conf. Use a different number from your iPhone or TV.

3Import the tunnel

Open WireGuard and click Import tunnel(s) from file, then pick the .conf file from your Downloads folder. The first time, macOS asks whether WireGuard may add VPN configurations. Allow it.

4Activate

Select the tunnel and click Activate. Your VPN on a Mac is running. Start your IPTV player.

To stop it, click Deactivate, or use the WireGuard icon in the menu bar.

Let it start by itself

WireGuard on the Mac has an On-demand setting for each tunnel. Choose Edit on the tunnel and switch on-demand on for Wi-Fi. Then the VPN starts by itself when the Mac joins a Wi-Fi network, at home, in a hotel or in a café.

The other way: OpenVPN Connect

If you prefer OpenVPN, use the .ovpn file from your account:

  • Install OpenVPN Connect from OpenVPN's website.
  • In your account, press Download next to a server location.
  • Drag the .ovpn file into OpenVPN Connect, or open the Menu, then My Profiles, click the add icon and choose Upload File.
  • Enter the VPN username and password from the Your VPN card and connect.

Both ways cover the whole Mac. WireGuard needs no username and password once the file is imported.

Which IPTV players does it cover?

All of them. While the VPN on a Mac is on, every app uses it: IPTV Smarters Pro for Mac, other desktop players and the browser. If you use IPTV Smarters Pro, its own VPN section with the .ovpn file is a third option; see the IPTV Smarters Pro guide.

A Mac and an iPhone

A VPN on a Mac and on the iPhone works the same way in WireGuard, with the same words in the menus. Give each device its own number in your account. See how to use a VPN on iPhone and iPad for IPTV.

Picture and connection tips

  • A network cable or a strong Wi-Fi signal makes the steadiest picture.
  • A VPN cannot make your internet faster than your plan. It helps when your provider slows down streaming it recognises.
  • Server location: Netherlands. Pick the location closest to you.

If something does not work

Most problems with a VPN on a Mac come down to one of these:

  • macOS did not ask for permission. Remove the tunnel in WireGuard, import it again and allow the VPN configuration.
  • The import shows an error. Download a fresh .conf file; do not open it in a text editor first.
  • The tunnel is active but nothing loads. Deactivate and activate again, or download a fresh file for the same device number.
  • OpenVPN Connect refuses the login. Copy the username and password again; they are case sensitive.
  • Nothing connects on one network. Some networks block VPN connections. Stealth mode works with V2Box on a Mac.

Plans and what they include

Every plan has the same features and differs only in length: 1 month for €5, 3 months for €14, 6 months for €25 or 12 months for €45. Prices as of October 2026, from €3.75 a month. Each plan covers up to 3 devices at the same time and includes the OpenVPN profile for IPTV apps and WireGuard for TVs, phones and computers, plus stealth mode for networks that block VPN connections.

Server location: Netherlands. We keep no activity logs. Our servers do not record the sites, apps or streams you use.
