IPTV buffering in the evening usually comes from one of three places: your home network, the network of your internet provider or the server that sends the stream. A VPN can help with one of them, when a network slows down video it recognises, and this guide shows how to tell which one you have.
The evening is when most people are online at the same time. Every part of the path between the stream and your TV is busier than in the day. That is why IPTV buffering often starts at night and is gone the next morning.
The usual causes
- Busy home Wi-Fi. Phones, laptops, game consoles and other TVs in the house all share one Wi-Fi network. In the evening they are all in use.
- A weak Wi-Fi signal. Walls, floors and distance from the router make the signal weaker. A weak signal has less room for video.
- A busy internet connection. Your connection is shared with the rest of the house. A large download or a video call takes part of it.
- A busy provider network. Your internet provider's network carries more traffic in the evening for everyone in your area.
- Slowed video traffic. Some networks slow some traffic at busy times. A VPN hides what traffic it is, which can help in that case.
- A busy stream server. The server that sends the stream can be busier at peak times too. A VPN cannot change that.
You can check the first four yourself. The steps below go from the quickest check to the one that needs a little more time.
1Test with a network cable
If your TV, box or computer has a network port, connect it to the router with a cable for one evening. If the IPTV buffering stops, the cause is your Wi-Fi, not your internet connection. Keep the cable, or move the router closer to the TV.
On a TV stick without a port, move the router or the stick so there are fewer walls between them.
2Check what else is online
Look at what else in the house uses the internet while you watch. Pause large downloads, game updates and cloud backups and watch again. If the picture steadies, your connection was simply full.
3Restart the router
A router that has run for weeks can slow down. Switch it off, wait a short while and switch it on again. Then restart the TV or the TV stick as well.
4Compare the day and the evening
Watch the same stream at the same place in the day and in the evening. Use the same device and the same network.
- Steady in the day, IPTV buffering in the evening, also with a cable. The path outside your home is busier at night. Go on to step 5.
- It stalls in the day too. The cause is more likely your Wi-Fi, the device or the stream itself.
5Test with the VPN on
With the VPN on, your provider only sees encrypted traffic going to our server. It cannot see which apps you use or what you watch. If the network was slowing down video it recognised, the picture can be steadier with the VPN. If the network is simply full, the VPN will not change that.
The only way to know is to test it on your own network, in the evening, when the buffering happens. That is what the free 60-minute trial is for: set it up in your IPTV app or in the WireGuard app and watch the same stream with the VPN on.
6Pick the closest server location
The shorter the path to the VPN server, the steadier the connection. Server location: Netherlands. Your account marks the location closest to you. Our guide on changing your VPN server location shows how to switch.
What a VPN cannot do
A VPN cannot make your internet faster than your plan. It cannot fix a weak Wi-Fi signal, a full connection at home or a busy stream server. It adds a little extra work to every connection, so on a connection that is already full it can even make things slightly worse.
Read does a VPN slow down IPTV for what changes with the VPN on, and is your internet provider slowing down IPTV for signs that the network treats video differently.
Which way to connect
- WireGuard covers the whole device and is light on older TV sticks. See the WireGuard guide.
- The OpenVPN profile works inside IPTV Smarters Pro. See the IPTV Smarters Pro guide.
Both use the same plan. If one gives a steadier picture on your network, keep that one.
Quick checklist for IPTV buffering
- Test one evening with a network cable.
- Pause downloads, updates and backups while you watch.
- Restart the router and the TV.
- Compare the same stream in the day and in the evening.
- Test with the VPN on, at the time the buffering happens.
- Pick the server location closest to you.
Plans and what they include
Every plan has the same features and differs only in length: 1 month for €5, 3 months for €14, 6 months for €25 or 12 months for €45. Prices as of October 2026, from €3.75 a month. Each plan covers up to 3 devices at the same time and includes the OpenVPN profile for IPTV apps and WireGuard for TVs, phones and computers, plus stealth mode for networks that block VPN connections.
Server location: Netherlands. We keep no activity logs. Our servers do not record the sites, apps or streams you use.
