A VPN for the whole family starts with one plan and a short list of the devices in your home. Every plan covers up to 3 devices at the same time, each device gets its own setup, and what counts is how many devices use the VPN at the same moment.
This guide shows how to set up a VPN for the whole family: how to count the devices, how to give each one its own setup and what to tell everyone so the VPN keeps working without your help.
What one plan covers
A device is anything that runs the VPN: a TV, a TV stick, a TV box, a phone, a tablet or a computer. Count the devices that use the VPN at the same time, whichever way they connect. A device that is switched off, or has the VPN switched off, does not count at that moment.
In most homes, not every device runs at once. The TV in the living room and two phones in the evening may be all that is on at the same time.
What happens when one more device connects
- With the OpenVPN profile, the oldest connection is closed so the newest one can connect.
- With WireGuard, two devices on the same device number push each other off the connection. Give each device its own number and that never happens.
If your family has more devices on at once than one plan covers, contact our support before you buy.
How to set up a VPN for the whole family
1List every device
Write down each device that should use the VPN and who uses it. Mark the ones that are often on at the same time. Keep that number within what your plan covers.
2Give each device its own device number
Sign in to your IPTV VPN account, open Subscriptions and open your VPN subscription. The Your VPN card holds your VPN username and password, an OpenVPN file (.ovpn) for each server location and a WireGuard setup for each device number.
Pick device 1 for the first device, device 2 for the next, and so on. Note which number went to which device. That one list saves a lot of questions later.
3Set up the TVs
On a TV or a TV stick, open your account in the TV's browser and press Download .conf for that TV's device number. Then import it in the WireGuard app. See WireGuard on a Fire TV Stick or a VPN on an Android TV box. If the TV only runs IPTV Smarters Pro, its own VPN section with the .ovpn file works too: see the IPTV Smarters Pro guide.
4Set up the phones and tablets
On each phone or tablet, install the WireGuard app and scan the QR code of that device's number from a second screen. See the iPhone and iPad guide.
5Set up the computers
On Windows and Mac, install WireGuard, press Download .conf and import the file. See the Windows guide and the Mac guide.
6Name each tunnel
When WireGuard asks for a name, use the device and its number, such as "Living room TV 1". Then anyone in the family can see at a glance which setup is which.
What to tell everyone
A VPN for the whole family only works if everyone knows a few habits. A short note on the fridge does more than a long explanation:
- Switch the VPN on first, then open the IPTV app.
- Do not copy your setup to another device. Ask for a new device number instead.
- If it does not connect, restart the app and the device before anything else.
- Switch the VPN off on a phone or a laptop you are not using, so there is room for the TV.
Make it start by itself
On Android TVs and phones, turn on Restore on boot in the WireGuard settings, so the tunnel comes back after a restart. On iPhone, iPad and Mac, WireGuard has an On-demand setting that can switch the tunnel on for you. Fewer steps for everyone means fewer questions for you.
A VPN is not a filter
A VPN for the whole family protects the traffic between your devices and our server. It is not a parental control, and it does not filter what anyone watches or opens. Use the controls of your devices and apps for that.
When something changes
A VPN for the whole family changes as the family's devices change:
- A new TV. Use the old TV's device number on the new one, and remove the tunnel from the old TV.
- A guest. Their device counts like any other while it uses the VPN.
- Two TVs keep dropping. They share a device number. Give each its own.
